Two Door Cinema Club + Metronomy + Tribes + Azealia Banks

Venue: O2 Academy Leeds

Date of gig: Wednesday, 15th February 2012

The NME Awards Tour landed in Leeds last night for its 5th stop in its 12-date tour.

Kicking off the proceedings was Azealia Banks, who I'd not heard much about till this tour. I was surprised that her style was not at all what I expected, being a more hip-hop rap artist rather than the softer Emilie Sandé sound I expected. Her short but sweet set included her breakthrough single 212 and ended on a cover of The Prodigy's 'Firestarter'.

Next up were Tribes who opened with 'Whenever' and went full steam ahead with crowd pleasers 'When My Day Comes' and 'In the Corner Of An English Field'. Though a short set, it was still full of energy and got the crowd fired up for the rest of the night.

It was then the turn of Metronomy, whose set was mostly tracks from last year's album 'The English Riviera' with personal favourites 'The Look' and 'Radio Ladio' going doing particularly well, especially the latter which received rambunctious chanting from the crowd. And of course, Metronomy were sporting their usual lights on their chests that flashed to the beat of every song.

Two Door Cinema Club brought the evening to a close, opening with 'Cigarettes in the Theatre' and ever popular 'Undercover Martyn' before powering through other crowd pleasers like 'Something Good Can Work'. The Irish trio also previewed some of their up-and-coming second album with new songs 'Handshake', 'Sleep Alone' and 'This is Moon' before energetically concluding the event with 'I Can Talk'.
